The Marine Biological Laboratory (СƵ) is dedicated to scientific discovery – exploring fundamental biology, understanding biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education. Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1888, the СƵ is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago.
A Convener of Scientific Expertise The СƵ is home to approximately 30 scientists who are recognized authorities in their fields. In addition, the СƵ attracts more than 1,200 of the world’s leading researchers, faculty, and students to its campus each year to collaborate, explore, and advance its mission of fundamental biological discovery. Areas of expertise and active exploration at СƵ include:
- new discoveries emerging from the study of novel marine organisms, encompassing research in regenerative biology, neuroscience, sensory physiology, and comparative evolution and genomics;
- the study of microbiomes and microbial diversity and ecology in a variety of ocean and terrestrial habitats;
- cutting-edge imaging and computation, illuminating cellular function and previously unknown biology; and
- organismal adaptation and resilience in the face of global change and rapidly changing ecosystems.
